Accidentally tried to log into a coporate website?
-
hey, I am trying to learn how to use typo3. Haven't used a cms before. Yesterday i did a google search for sites using typo3 so that i could see what sites have been made with typo3, for inspiration. I got to one site for a coporation and then did /typo3 to confirm that it uses typo3. Then a bit later i tried logging in with admin, password, thinking i was logging into my dummysite (lots of tabs open) and when the combination didn't work i suddenly noticed that it was the corporations website. Now, i'm not a hacker but i know enough about typo3 to know that they now have my ip address and a failed log-in attempt. What do you guys reckon, could i be in any kind of legal trouble? Cheers.

Answer:
At my office, I only look at failed sign in attempts if it happens more than three times.

One wont get you into trouble but if they saw repeated attempts I'm sure you would hear something.
During the Bush-Cheney era you would find yourself at Guantanamo. Now a days, you will be labeled hero. NO DUDE don't be a pu*sy you are fine.

They may put a block on your IP address. Unless you got in or changed anything then they wont come after you. (p.s. don't do it again :P)

Dude, dont worry about it. Its not illegal to try. Seriously you will be fine. *TRUST ME* www.Gundament.com

nah. Repeated attempts could be considered an attempt to crack, however, there has to be reasonable proof of the intent. That means, the worst you will get is a phone call (and this is only in extreme cases)

If you only did it once, I doubt they would even bother to do anything. If you made many failed attempts, the administrator might start looking in their logs to see if you tried before, but a really good hacker knows how to mask their true IP, and unless you really succeeded in doing damage to their network, you have little to worry about.

It depends on how paranoid and well-informed the admin on the site is. Some years ago, a man in the UK(?) got the police on the door a little while after trying to donate money using the lynx-browser... the admin hadn't heard of that broswer, and thus assumed it was a hacker. Trying to log-in as admin from outside the organization, will probably raise some red-flags... but you'll probably be OK. Just make sure you can document that you were trying to learn if asked.
