What is web hosting?

What web hosting is better?

  • Finding a web hosting service is giving me a headache. In some sites a web hosting is glorified and in others is defamed, I don't understand... I looking for a web host in where is possible to LOAD data files that the visitors visiting my website can DOWNLOAD, and where I can be able to gain money from advertisements for example. If you have a web site you can post the address so I can view it. Some people say that Fat Cow is the best, but, read the Bandwidth and Disk Usage agreement of Fat Cow: 13. Bandwidth and Disk Usage. Fat-Cow provides Users with bandwidth, disk space and other resources, such as e-mail and/or file-transfer-protocol ("FTP") accounts, the amount of which is defined in FatCow web pages describing the package of Services purchased at the time of purchase. In some cases, FatCow may not establish a specific amount of Bandwidth and/or Disk Usage, and refer to that as "Unlimited" disk space or bandwidth. In all cases, the Services are intended for normal use only, and any activity that results in excessive usage that is inconsistent with normal usage patterns is strictly prohibited. Then, what the heck "Unlimited Bandwidth and Disk Usage" means? Host Monster said this: "UNLIMITED" USAGE POLICIES AND DEFINITIONS 1. What "Unlimited" means. HostMonster.Com does not set an arbitrary limit or cap on the amount of resources a single Subscriber can use. In good faith and subject to these Terms, HostMonster.Com makes every commercially reasonable effort to provide its Subscribers with all the storage and bandwidth resources needed to power their web sites successfully. But some people said that Host Monster servers fail to much and if you have much hits they say that it's too much bandwidth. As I say, it's a headache for me...

  • Answer:

Most websites only consume a very small amount of bandwidth and disk space. Web hosting companies that provide unlimited anything as a plan feature are banking on the fact that you won’t use very much. Unlimited is a marketing trick to get your business. The web hosting market is very competitive. Although selling plans that pretend to be unlimited can seem dishonest, it does not mean that the hosting company will not provide good service. Regardless they really cant give you unlimited bandwidth and disk space, FatCow is my preferred web host and I have been hosted by them for 4 years. I don't have any complains, only positive things to say.

This is the same for all hosts. Unlimited disk space and bandwidth means that you can use as much disk space and bandwidth as you want, but it should be reasonable, which means that when you start getting millions of monthly visitors you should switch from shared hosting to a dedicated server or cloud hosting. Shared hosting is great for starting your website. It's cheap and powerful, and when your site outgrows it, you should switch to a more expensive host. (like $100+/month). I recommend one of these shared hosts: http://www.hosttell.com/ Powweb has the best offer right now. It's on a 50% sale - $3.88/month ($46.56/year), (a free domain name included).

Normal usage is people reading your web pages, posting to your forum, etc. Heavy downloading is something you have to discuss before you pay for the account. All hosting companies have plans for heavy bandwidth/disk space usage, but that's not the plans listed on their site. Pick a few hosts that meet your needs otherwise (good uptime, fast, good tech support) and see what prives they'll give you for the bandwidth you want. (You won't get truly unlimited bandwidth - they don't have that much to give you - they buy limited bandwidth from their upstream.)

ouching on the point above, the first thing that needs to be determined is your individual needs and what you are looking to accomplish. For instance, do you want a personal website? An e-commerce site? Does it require a blog or other additional software? These answers play a major part in determining the company best suited for your needs.

I personally LOVE HostGator! But, I would recommend going through a site like http://hostgumbo.com just to pick up the freebies they offer, like right now they are paying for your first 3 months of hosting no matter which one of their hosts you choose, but I would pick hostgator. You won't regret it. They are an experienced company and I've never had any downtime with my sites.
