What is a good web hosting company to use?
-
Other people have asked this, but I haven't been happy with the answers. Any help would be very much appreciated on this. There is so much marketing junk out there I can't tell the good companies from the bad. So I'm looking for suggestions. I need to host a web site. Here is what I need: 1. Scalability. I want to start small and grow, so it will have to be a company with a wide range of "service plans." 2. Trust. I don't want a company that offers free domain registration. I don't trust it, and it seems like a scam to me. They register the domain, they own it. I already own my domain. I don't trust a company that wants to own other's domains. Likewise, I don't trust a company that puts emphasis on things like the number of e-mail addresses they offer. "Now with 5000 e-mail addresses!" looks like a distraction to me. 3. Reliable and affordable almost go without saying. But I'd be willing to pay a little more for better service. 4. Freedom to advertise. I noticed some hosting companies have restrictions on what kind of advertising you can have on a site. I want to be able to put whatever kind of advertising I want on my own site. 5. PHP Thanks for your help guys.

Almost everyone is offering a free domain, because their competition does it, so it's a nice selling point. But of course you don't have to use it. I use Namecheap for my domain names. If you're willing to pay $20+/monthly for a web host I recommend: 1. http://www.mediatemple.com 2. http://www.slicehost.com If you're looking for something cheaper I recommend Dreamhost: http://www.dreamhost.com/hosting.html (you can get $50 discount by using the promo code DNA) P.S. If you want to start small (something around $10) 1. Register your domain with a 3rd party (like Namecheap) 2. Buy hosting with Dreamhost, but choose the monthly payment option. ($10.95/month + $49.95 setup fee) 3. Use the promo code DNA to waive the setup fee. 4. Point your domain name to Dreamhost dns servers 5. This way you get cheap hosting, but with no long term contract, so you can cancel at any time and switch to another host if you feel you need more resources. 6. Switching is really fast, just backup your website content, upload it to the new host and point your domain name to your new host and that's it. P.P.S. I've been using Dreamhost for over 2 years, hosting over 20 sites with them, and they've been great so far, but it's nice to keep your options open.

I think Freewebs.com is the place for you. Many companies use it to host their websites because the general look is professional and it is very simple. You can easily upload blogs, pictures and videos and you can choose your very own design for your page. There also is a guest book where visitors, viewers etc can leave a note for you. Hope this helped.

Any of the big hosts works fine, http://www.uk2.net http://www.bluehost.com http://www.hostgator.com http://www.lunarpages.com All about $10 bucks a month and all met your requirements. It doesn't get tricky until you are doing a lot of traffic and need a vps or something better. If you want scalability go with uk2, hostgator, or LP, they can all move you to a vps type product then a server as you grow.

Begin with setting up your own webpage as your current internet provider will provide free hosting as discussed below. If you are currently a paid Internet subscriber, you are entitled to a "homepage" which often contains simple navigation and editing tools. And if you use the Netscape browser, the built-in Composer feature is a superior HTML authoring tool which is totally free. You can easily generate a full-blown website as a Homepage by FTPing webpages using NotePad, Word, Dreamweaver, and FrontPage. Nevertheless, the "homepage" URL is likely to be "http://homepage.earthlink.com/subscribe… name" and that URL can easily be overwritten via a redirection service, i.e., "mydomain.com" which allows you to link any registered domain name to "mask" another website. For example, should you type in the "domain name," you will be immediately transported to the homepage and the hompage URL of http://homepage.earthlink.com/subscriber... a homepage URL which will be masked by the domain name. And the charge for the redirection service [even at godaddy.com] is normally FREE. When you acquire a domain name, connect it using a redirection service [as discussed above] and submit/publish the domain name on major search engines/directories in order for Net surfers to find your website. Currently the following website [Nazos -- which is a Homepage] is ranked with a PR No. 1 [out of 340,000 search results] at Google.com when searched for - sandwiches downtown los angeles [must spell out los angeles; NOT LA]. Good luck!

Honestly I was in the same position as you. I was tired of letting my business and clan in the hands of places like godaddy, hostgator, dreamhost. I looked and looked and I found Phynom Technologies. They offer the best IMHO, very nice people they worked out a custom plan that will grow with time like my business and my forums.
