What are the different uses of the computer?

What uses up the most space in a computer?

  • The space in my computer has now went down to 16% what uses the most up inside the computer i have taken out old programmes and got it up to 23% can someone help with this please.

  • Answer:

It may be worth adjusting the amount of drive space allocated for System Restore. You can get to this option by right clicking on 'Computer' and choosing 'Properties' from the list. (My Computer for XP). Look on the 'System Protection' tab and you can change how much it uses and clear out the old restore points. If you use Vista then you're stuck with it always using 15% of your hard drive - with a 500GB drive that means it'll use up 75GB, which is ridiculous. I have it set to use 1% on mine (Win 7). Also, you could download Ccleaner and let it scan for junk files. http://www.ccleaner.com/ You may want to check the setting before it scans so that it doesn't forget all your passwords, plus you can tell it not to delete certain cookies that contain info about pages you use regularly. Here's a link for a freeware program that does the same as CrystalZephyr's suggestion. Sequoiaview shows you your drives and folders/files as different sized coloured blocks that you can browse, but it doesn't cost a penny. http://www.win.tue.nl/cgi-bin/usr/sequoia/download3.cgi

I assume you mean "hard drive - disk space." The kinds of files which take up the most room are usually, in order: * The operating system - of course! These days you're talking tens of Gigabytes - Windows Vista runs 20 Gigabytes. * Applications - Like, do you have the full install of The Sims with all expansion packs? These can be 15 gigabytes and more. * Movie files - Downloaded/ripped DVDs and other full-length movies. Can be 700MB to a Gig or more. * Music files - MP3s and other song formats. Can be 2MB to 10MB, but whole folders of these add up. * Image files - High-definition wallpapers can run around 4MB to 10MB, animated GIFs can run higher depending on how many frames. *Text files - the least of all. I have whole ebooks in plain text which take up 500KB. PDFs and Word docs, however, may run up to 20MB or so.

I will assume that you're using Windows. 1- Try disk Cleanup utility, it will remove a lot of crap. 2- Scan you computer for Worms/Viruses.

It depends on what you've installed on your PC. If you really don't know what's on there, there's a great free app called spacemonger that will show you what lives on your disk. Download and run this on your hard drive and you will "see" what's taking up the most space by the size of the square.

The simple way to answer your question is to go to Windows search, search for anything greater than 50 MB.
