Where do I go if I want to make a website that is too complex for any online web hosting service?
-
I have (in my opinion) a very good idea for a website. I consulted with a buddy of mine and he said because of security concerns and such, it would not be wise to use an online web hoster because of the potential risk of losing money. (My site will involve money and high amounts of it, too!) Where should I go/what should I do if I want to make such a site? Any suggestions at all will be greatly appreciated.

Ha Ha HA Your friend is a little slow in the intelligence department. IF you don't use an online web host, then how will anybody see your site? If your friend is suggesting that you don't use a third party web hosting company, then here's what you need. 1) You're going to need a server to host it out of your home or business. Expect to pay at least a few thousand dollars for a Windows server or less for a Linux server. 2) You're going to need a really good Internet connection. I suggest at least a T1. Depending on how far you are from the telephone central office with Tier 1 support, you can expect to pay at least $400 per month plus at least $250 per month for each "band" of distance from the telco that handles the service. If your service is popular and you need to support more simultaneous users, you should invest in a T3 line. Expect to pay between $20,000 and $35,000 per month for a T3. 3) You're dealing with money, so you're going to need an SSL certificate.. by far the cheapest of your upfront expenses. Expect to pay around $400 annually for a good one from Verisign. 4) You'll need your own email server, so you can communicate with your users/subscribers. SmarterTools makes a good one. That'll get you started. You'll need to design and build your site. Keep in mind, that you could do all of this on a dedicated server hosted at, Crystaltech.com (with your own domain) for a few hundred dollars per month, and it would be just as secure, or possibly more so because they really know what they are doing and monitor your domain's status 24/7. 3)

Assuming you can run the site on a single box, you can use any reputable hosting company. If it's too large for them, hire a permanent staff (which you're going to need anyway) and task them with setting it up and maintaining it. If all you have is an idea, get back to studying until you at least have a 4 year degree. Everyone has ideas - one in ten thousand is actually worth more than a dollar. Hire someone? Do you have $150,000 available? That's what you need in the bank now to hire one person. (If you can't cap your first 3 years, you're guaranteed to fail.) And you'd better have a sound business plan before you go even one step past the "very good idea" stage. Or you'll fail. What I suggest, after more decades in this business than you've spent breathing, is to stay in school, get an education and revisit your "very good idea" in about 10 years.

For security, you need: your own server - you can start small then upgrade using a cloud platform. you need a SSL certificate. you need a secure web hosting provider. you can get all of these with an affordable cost from vexxhost.com, more info: http://vexxhost.com then visit their cloud server page and about us page for the info you need.

Check out the recommended web hosts at http://buywebspacetoday.com/ -- they're established, reliable, and best of all their plans are bundled with script installers so you can install an e-commerce system easily. There are several e-commerce systems you can choose from. They're free and make it very easy for you to use and integrate payment processing systems. Good luck with your business!

I believe you'd have to get a business internet connection through an ISP or rent bandwith from a telecom directly. A home internet connection generally isn't good enough to handle a high traffic web server, and it would probably be against your contract.
