How Smart Do You Need TO Be To Become A Programmer?

  • Hi, I am a first year Computer Science college student in the Philippines. I would just like to ask the opinion of programmers out there if an average or below average student could make it as professional programmer. The last few semesters were a horrible experience for me in which I barely pass two of my programming subjects. Still it was quite an achievement when the failing rate of those subjects was around 50%-60%. However, every time I think about it or look at my programming books we have barely scratch the surface of what we are supposed to learn. So do you really need to be a genius to be a GOOD Programmer or to be précised a programmer that gets paid a decent amount?

    Maybe this is help you get inspired or make a drastic decision. It is not the mental prowess that makes a person a programmer, chemist, mathematician, etc ... It is an advantage to have the aptitude and intelligence for it. But what will really make you graduate and go into the field is the interests and love of the work. If your not interested in what you do. You will get bored, burn out easily. You won't be happy. As for your grades, you'll be happy to know sometimes people with not so high grades can do well. Because there's a difference between theoretical and practical. If your a pragmatic person you may have not appreciated the concepts cause you did not see the actual application and usage and therefore did not do well. Career and financial success is a different thing. I don't want to give you nightmare or let you see the horrors. Cause no matter what company or what course or work you get there will always be company politics. Your career and financial success may sometimes depend on how well you can make people like you or not get in their anger. I don't want to make you paranoid or anything so I'm stopping there.

Well, any idiot can program. But I'm afraid it does take a lot of mental RAM to be able to program well. Computer programming is one of the most intellectually-challenging activities you can indulge in - but although that means it's very, very hard, it also means that it's good for your mind and you'll actually find yourself getting smarter as you go along. Keep at it, and don't get discouraged - but expect it to be hard. Expect it to be hard, but know that you can do it. Have confidence in yourself.

A very tough question. But I will make this simply for you. Let's say you were gifted as a spelling Bee person. If you switch to become a PC tech because your friends choose that field or because such specific field pays more money, then it will be very hard for you. I don't know, but I was born to specialize in computer technology, so my grades were in their 90% I never choose this field because I saw other people choosing it, I choose it because it was what I was capable of. Another answer would be that if you are serious about your goals and future accomplishment, you would put all your interest in that path, which would eventually become very easy You have a great day.

u need to be smart to make ur program run efficeintly basically u cant be one of those Indians u get when u call for microsoft support cause they wouldnt know how to u just have to be good at math and structures and it will be easy

You do need to be reasonably intelligent. However, I don' think that's the biggest factor. You need to think logically and consistently to be a good programmer. The 50% failure rate doesn't surprise me--it's weeding out those without the right mindset.
