What are “registry entries”, and why does a computer gradually slow down?

Is there a way of cleaning your own computer registry without paying mine has 1414 invalid entries?

  • internet has identified them have got so far and then they say you have to pay

Sounds like you got onto a site that bulls..ts you into buying their product...there is no easy way to clean your windows registry..I for one, don't trust third party apps to clean what could lead to disaster by messing up the reg...one wrong thing and boom...no OS to get into to! I would manually check all reg notations and you could do a long tedious adventure in deleting any dormant keys in the reg...ie: like older programs you un-installed and search from there but be wary!

You could use a combination of MSConfig and Regedit which come with the Windows operating system. But you really need to know what you are doing. You can get a comple list of all files on any one disk by using the Command Line Interface (CLI) and typing in >filelist.txt dir *.*/s/b The above command when the CLI is 'looking' at the C drive would appear on the command line as C:\>>filelist dir *.*/s/b The list of all files will be in the file called 'filelist.txt'. I use this method rather than use anti virus software. One thing you might want to do is use MSConfig and look under startup and make a hand written list of the programs listed there and when you get a virus check again. You will know which program is the virus and can delete it from the disk and erase the registry entry using Regedit. Read Help and Support (search MSConfig) for more information on this. If you are really stuck then use MICROSOFT software, MICROSOFT know their OS better than any one else - they are not going to screw up your system. Ignore all the thumbs down I am now going to get, too many people on this site either own or work for software companies that create anti virus software and are just promoting there own software. It is quite possible that these people are actually spreading the virus.
