Difference between "hits" and "visits" on a web page stats?
-
Could one of you nice computer savvy people explain the difference to me, I'm looking at the stats for my web site and not really understanding what the numbers mean. The hits # is huge compared to the visits #. Thanks in advance

Answer:
"Hits", in the raw form, counts every download from your site. So a visit to your home page could score hits for the page itself, the background, every graphic, etc. But all those hits just count as one visit. I think most web counters count a visit only when the visitor first arrives at you site. So as she moves from page to page, the hit counter continues to count all those individual files being served, but it's still just one visit. What the software is looking at is whether the visitor is coming from an outside site or not, so is the visitor goes to another site and then comes back, I think they count that as a second visit.

Alright, most of the time I am good with computers but this is up in the air with me. If I was to guess I would say that the "Visits" might be how many times people have visited your website, but have no guess on what "Hits" are. Dont take it from me though, Hope you find what you are looking for. Brodster

'Hits' are how many times total anyone has visited the page, including multiple visits by the same person, or IP address. 'Visits' on the other hand are 'unique hits.' This means that it only counts the number of unique people who have visited your site. For example, if I am visiting your page every day for a week - you'll get 7 hits from me, but only 1 visit.
