    Technically the bold line is much better - I have both. The camera is self focusing on the bold and the processor and radio is much stronger on them. Certainly the touchpad on the 9700 is much better than the ball on the curve

The Bold series of products was and is designed by RIM to sit above the curve range and thus technically it is a better device, but it depends a great deal on what you want to do with the device. The optical trackpad on the 9700 is very good, and by choosing the 9700 you would be to a degree future-proofing yourself.

I would recommend trying out the Bold.A friend of mine has that phone and loves it.
