Anyone know how to update a japanese psp?

I bought my 7yr old a psp for Christmas from ebay (never again)!!! and it turns out it's a japanese console. He also got Fifa 12 which needs to update before he can play it but because the console is Japanese it wont do and keeps coming up with an error message. If anyone has any ideas of how I can update it then we both would be extremely grateful xx thanks again Sarah
