What is Homebrew, Pandora Battery and Magic Memory Stick?

  • What is Homebrew, Pandora Battery and Magic Memory Stick? What does it have to do with PSP. Please explain. Thanks in advance.

  • Answer:

Sony's PSP is a closed system which means that you have to get a license from Sony to develop games or applications for it. The hacker community has found ways to bypass the measures that Sony has put in place to keep the average Joe from developing and running code on a PSP. This unlicensed code is called homebrew. Actually any code written for any computer or handheld that is made by a hobbyist that is just doing it for fun is called homebrew. Pandora's Battery and Magic Memory Stick are specialized 3rd party hardware that allows you to run whatever code you want on your PSP. One of the most popular types of homebrew applications are the emulators for older systems. You could play almost all of the classic console systems like NES, SNES, Genesis/Megadrive and even some of the older computers like C64. The PSP will also do PSX but the emulator is part of the firmware and was written by Sony so that they could sell you some of the older PSX titles again but the community found a way to use that to play the PSX games without having to purchase them from Sony. Of course playing any ROM (cartridge based system) or ISO (disc based system) is illegal to have if you don't own the original although I wouldn't expect the cops to be busting down your door if you did. Homebrew developers also port games from other systems and some even write their own original games. Homebrew gaming has actually become fairly popular with those who don't mind tinkering with their handheld devices. A new handheld called Pandora just came out (actually taking pre-orders so it’s not even out yet) that is 100% geared towards this sort of thing. It’s an open system so there is no hacking necessary to run whatever code you want on it. It has sold extremely well for a device that most people have never heard of.
