Blackberry wifi help?

Can somebody help me with the wifi on my Blackberry 8520?

• I got this today as a gift from my aunt so this is my first time with the Blackberry. I have a lot of questions. To start with I don't have a blackberry data plan. From what I've read online you can use some features, like the BBM for one, via wi-fi and without a data plan. However the wi-fi isn't working for me. Other BB will connect easily, but my phone can't. It tells me network acquired but it doesn't actually let me use the wi-fi. I did update the device today but it hasn't solved my current problem. What should I try now? I read one guide that said to turn off the wi-fi and then the GSM as well, but I don't know what exactly is GSM or where it's located on the phone.

  edge is not data service EDGE is and since you don't have a data plan you don't have data services. Options icon - Advanced Options - Browser Default browser configuration: Hotspot Browser Manage Connections icon - Set Up Wi-Fi Connection Scan For Networks Select your network Enter the Pre-shared key Click Connect You will be limited to browser use only so apps (such as BBM) and e-mail will not work.
