What is ping on bbm (blackberry messenger)?

I got my Blackberry for Christmas and I am new to bbm, how do you ping someone??

If say someone hasn't replied and its urgent or something you can ping them or you just want to ping them for some other reason, when you're on their conversation screen press the blackberry/menu button and then it says something like 'ping contact' just press that!
