How do I get internet and bbm on my new Blackberry Curve?

I just got a new Blackberry Curve 8310 for at&t off of ebay and I have a data plan for at&t. When I got the phone yesterday, I couldnt find bbm and the internet doesnt work. It only opens the initial page but i cant go anywhere else like google or any other website. I don't know why it's not working since I have a data plan. Any ideas? I also read something online that said you have to go to the IM icon to get to bbm, but it's not on my phone. I checked the full list of icons and it's still not there. How do I get Blackberry Messenger on the phone as well as internet?
