Why won't my Blackberry Curve's media card format?

I inserted the card into the slot under the battery. I went to Options - Media Card. My settings read: Media Card Support: On Encryption Mode: Device Encrypt Media File: Yes Mass Storage Mode Support: Off When I try to 'Install Media Card' nothing happens. When I try to 'Format Card' it says, "Media Card Format Failed".
