  • Answer:

The PlayStation Portable has that bright, beautiful screen, but there are still times when you might want to see your handheld games and UMD videos up on a big screen. Sony originally considered adding a video out port to the PSP, but that feature was lost in development. Team Xtender, a hardware outfit which has made the MagicBox Xbox mouse/keyboard adaptor and a series of crystal console cases, has officially announced a device that will put TV-out features into the PSP at last. The unit was officially announced earlier in September, and has at last been revealed in a fully modeled working prototype. The final production unit requires slight modification of the PSP to install, but it is a solderless process (you just remove the PSP's front faceplate and, assumedly, connect to the PSP's video and control ribbons.) Modifying the system with this accessory goes outside of the bounds of the PSP's warranty and may void you from service on your PSP, so those who are interested should be aware of the consequences -- however, the added feature is a highly-desirable addition for the system (especially for us journalists, who have no other way yet of recording PSP videogame footage to show you games in action), and the process seems relatively painless for those who are not afraid to brave it. Once installed, you have a small permanent extension on the bottom of the PSP designed to meld with the hardware, and the PSP's faceplate will be a new custom unit. (Team Xtender is also planning on making a line of faceplates, including multi-color units for those jealous of the new Slate White PSP) The actual hardware needed to play video out to the TV (the video processor and cable ports) plugs into the extension port when in use, allowing you to use your PSP as unobtrusively as possible when it's detached. All of the inlet ports of the PSP (USB, UMD, etc.) will still be accessible with even the full-sized unit plugged in. Used in TV mode with the docking station attached, the full unit works as a stand for the PSP, and you can plug a PS2 controller in to play with the system (the PSP's controls will also still be functional.) Audio is carried through the headphone port, and the unit must be plugged into a wall outlet to work (there is an extra plug attached to the unit, which looks to be for charging the PSP while you are using the TV system. The TV output can display 16x9 widescreen (at standard NTSC resolution -- this isn't a PSP-to-HDTV converter here, and we're assuming that this little unit is not processing out anamorphic video) or a squished 4x3 for full-frame television. There is also a Turbo switch, which looks to be used for adding speed control to games. Three standard RCA AV jacks are on the back of the unit for connecting to your TV or video entertainment set-up. Video output is unfortunately limited to composite video, as there is not an included port for S-Video.
