What is the difference between a smartphone and a pda?

What's the difference between a SmartPhone and a PDA?

  • They both have web browsers right? They both can send and receive email right? What's the difference?

  • Answer:

When the concept of the PDA was first marketed, it was aimed more at creating a portable data access device for basic needs. The technology for Wi-Fi and cell phone use were not compact or practical enough. Now the lines are so blurred, it is almost impossible to separate the two devices. One example is the upcoming iPhone from Apple. It will be a phone, a web browser and e-mail client, a lite database device for names, addresses and other field data, and other functions that have yet to be fully announced. It is more a smart phone than a PDA, but with the OS X operating system, Mail and Safari web browser, it is far more than many other devices in its class.

The answer is not much. Just depends on what the manufacturers decide to call it when they wake up this morning. To explain on that more: You shouldn't base a purchase depending on whether it is a PDA or a SmartPhone. Which is saying there isn't much different. But ya, the Smart Phone tends to be also the PDA, and the PDA tends not to be a phone of sorts.

most PDA's are not phones....smartphones are both.

A true PDA will not have a phone component.
