How do I update my BlackBerry the RIGHT way?

Okay so I have a Blackberry Curve 8900 and I love it. I've tried to update my OS many times and every time it gets to the end it says "an unknown error has occurred, system update unsuccessful" I use BlackBerry Desktop Manager v4.7 My BlackBerry runs on 4.5.1 and I'm trying to get it to 5.0.1 I've read many threads online about people that have had the same problem but worse. Their phones have been caught in an endless reboot loop and they end up messing up their Blackberry, it crashes and they loose everything. I've tried to update my BB a few times and luckily that has never happened to me but I've still been unsuccessful. Can anybody tell me HOW TO UPDATE MY BLACKBERRY THE RIGHT WAY? No "unknown errors" no "endless reboot loops" and no "crashes" I know my BB will run a lot faster with a newer OS So please any tips, suggestions or solutions? Thank you SO much in advance for all of your answers and help.
