Do you like Palm OS 5 or Windows Mobile better?

Which PDA OS is best for beginners? Windows Mobile 5 or Palm OS?

  • My fiancee wants something on which she can keep a schedule and possibly an address book. She has never used a PDA before. I saw what I think was a Palm Z22 at Circuit City. Would this Palm OS machine be a good entry level PDA for someone who is new to the handheld scene? Or would a Windows Mobile machine be better?

  • Answer:

The Zire 22 is a good PDA. I prefer Palm OS myself over Windows Mobile, but if you (or your fiancee ) have no prior experience with PDAs, the operating system should make no difference. You can run native Word, Excel, Powerpoint, PDF and all sorts of other kinds of files on a Palm OS too. For the Palm OS, you can also get hundreds and thousands of free applications... hint hint :) Seriously, for a beginner I think the most important thing is that the PDA be something that they like and are comfortable with. If for some reason they don't like it, they won't be using it long term, and then it was just a waste of time... and money! However, if they end up liking how it looks, feels, works, then it can lead to years of good use even if it doesn't cook your dinner and wash your car at the same time.

Windows Mobile would be better. I have a Dell Axim x50v running Windows Mobile 2003 SE. It can run native Word docs, Excel spreadsheets, and read PDF's (this needs a seperate PDF viewer app). Plus, it will sync up with her Outlook info when you first install/setup the pda. A big plus is that with alot of the free apps out there, she could listen to music, watch videos, view pictures, get on the web, etc. Check out the Dell website for PDA's at http://www.dell.com or the Palm site at http://www.palmone.com or the HP Ipaq at http://www.shopping.hp.com/can/handhelds/handhelds/1/storefronts;jsessionid=F9BpPihClLbIoykgUdiBmO9eQwDV32F5xN7lBSSLsy8I2so9WeoN!995078006 Good luck!

YES. ABSOLUTELY! Windows mobile is much harder to use that palm os. Palm is much better for people who just want a reliable organizer. Besides, there are thousand more free programs for palm than for windows mobile (www.freewarepalm.com) and palm is more stable. Windows mobile is better for tech-oriented people and businessmen. I had a palm zire 21 and it was much more stable and easier to use that my dell axim. I only got a dell because I wanted the bigger screen and faster processor that the dell had. I only switched to the dell when I dropped my palm zire on a rock and broke the screen. Besides, palm devices are cheaper and smaller. Trust me, for a beginner, get the palm.

I have to agree with Mr. Know It All's recommendation of Microsoft Mobile. It is a familiar interface that can be picked up immediately, whereas Palm has a bit more of a learning curve.
