How does the Blackberry Storm work?

Is it true that an unlocked blackberry storm will not work with a carrier that does not sell that model?

• I bought a Blackberry Storm unlocked from germany, the phone works with a sim card from my carrier in Venezuela (movistar), but the customer service says that I won't be able to use the blackberry apps like the messenger because it's a phone they don't support yet because they don't sell it...Is this true? Am I stucked with a blackberry that can't use bbmessenger?

  I do know that with my carrier that if you have an unlocked phone you can use it for voice but they cannot guarantee that it will work for data like bb messenger and internet
