I'm in the market for a new GPS...?
-
I currently own a Lowrance car gps system that is 3 years old. In general, it works pretty well but it is large, bulky and heavy and it's getting to the point where, when I power it on, it takes anywhere from 2-3 minutes for it to find my current location before beginning to navigate. So, I am looking to purchase a new GPS system. I have a few diehard requirements for my new system: it MUST have up-to-date, relevant points of interest. I often want to find the closest Olive Garden, Panera, or Target etc., and I want a system that really has these and other POIs loaded. I also would really like speech recognition and spoken street names. I'd like to be able to auto-sort multiple destinations to provide the most economic route as well as auto re-route and choice of route setup (faster time, shorter distance, etc.). I also like to have the travel time and estimated arrival time on the screen. I've researched Garmin, TomTom, and Magellan but I'm getting a bit overwhelmed. I'd really love to be able to test-drive each system myself but that's not feasible. Does anyone have any recommendations for a quality, reasonably priced gps that has a large POI database (that's relevant, not obscure...I don't care about JimBob's crab shanty) and has at least some of my other preferences? Thanks.

Answer:
When you add text to speech, multi-point routing, and speech recognition to the requirements, there aren't many models that qualify. I found four here: http://gpsact.com/#text_to_speech=Y&voice_command=Y&multipoint_routing=Y Did you find any other models with all the features? I am interested in them too. You can do a side by side comparison for those models here: http://gpsact.com/compare.php?ids=52,30,46,29 I own a Garmin. Its POIs are reasonably up to date. Since new businesses open and old ones close every day, you can't expect any system to be completely accurate. My Garmin is correct probably 90% of times, and I am satisfied. Other options such as auto re-route, choice of route setup, and arrival time estimate are standards nowadays.
