What is the difference between '3G' and GPRS?
-
I'm a bit of a technophobe but I'm trying to get to grips with new phone. I've been having issues connecting to the internet and when I phone the helpline I always get asked if 'GPRS' in upper case is in the top right hand of the screen. Occasionally it is, but more often than not it is '3G'...what is the difference? And what is the difference between gprs and GPRS?

Answer:
3G is a faster version of the connection that rides on the GPRS platform. In some places where connectivity is low, it is quite possible that the 3G sign becomes the GPRS sign. On some phones like Blackberry models, GPRS means the signel is available and you are connected to the network. gprs on the other hand means the signel is available but you are not connected. Hope this helps : )

Your telephone can connect to the internet using different data transfer protocols. GPRS and 3G represent two such protocols. They are different roads that go to the same place, the internet. 3G allows for a faster data transfer than GPRS but also generally needs a stronger signal to ensure reliable high speed data transfer. That is why your phone will mostly show 3G because it has a good enough signal to allow the faster protocol to work but just sometimes if the signal is not quite good enough the phone will drop back to the GPRS protocol to ensure reliable data transfer.
3G is useful if you download lots of content, streamed 3G content is increasing in popularity (TV on your phone), video calling is costly. Personally I use WiFi more than my 3G connection because its virtually as quick and free if you have WiFi spots in your area.

They are different systems for connecting your phone to the internet. 3G should be considerably quicker although it depends on how many people near you are trying to do the same thing at the same time.
