Have you tried the magicJack home phone service and how do you like it?

I'm searching for a home phone service and I saw a commercial for magicJack and was intrigued. If you've used it, how does it work and is it really as inexpensive as they say?

Answer:
One day I came home to find that my mom no longer had her home phone bundled with cox. She explained magicjack to me and it seemed like a great deal. It worked fine, but always having to type the area code was a hassled (even if your calling a number in your area code, you still have to type your area code or the call doesnt go through). It was all fine and good until the first time it got all crackly and broken up. I figured out that it was everything I was downloading using the same internet connection as magic jack. Later on I found out that you don't have to be downloading much to make it break up. Simply loading youtube videos or quickly downloading something will make it sound horrible until the internet connection is completely clear. Another thing about it is that it has to have the magicjack program running on the computer in order for it to work. So for me, it didn't work out. Between the router randomly shutting off, and the internet being used as the same time as magicjack, there were just too many times that it would not be functioning, or sound to broken up. Overall, I say go for it IF you have a good computer and do not use your internet heavily. If you live alone, or are the only computer user in your house, and you have a decent computer, its a great deal, but if you have a big family with a router and a bunch of people who use the internet, then steer clear of it. Its like showering and having to worry about other people use water. If you live alone its not an issue, but if theres other people using water/internet then your going to get the unexpected freezing sensation of not being to make out what the other person is saying.

It is NOT a reliable VOIP service. Echoes, cut-offs, loss of service, no customer support, incoming call problems....and you must have a good broadband computer connection, and have the computer on all the time.!! BTW, Skype is not so hot either. (It might even go out of business next year due to law suits and contract infringements.)

skype is cheaper and basically same thing... you have to have a voip phone or module/adapter and have to have internet... i have normal cordless home phones (set of 2)and an answering machine.. i get number from skype and bought $10 skype voip adapter on ebay... as long as internet is on i can dial & receive calls just like a normal old fashioned land line phone and way cheaper than qwest or even magicjack (also wayyyyyyyy cheaper on international)

My dad used it as a work line and he loved it! It saved him hundreds on the Verizon bill. It is like Skype but to download Skype is free (but calling landlines/home phones and cellphones result in fees). The reception is good too. His only complaint was that it had to be hooked up to the computer to work. That can be annoying at times. I give it 4.5 stars. PS if you think about getting Skype, depending on who you call, it will cost about the same. With Skype your friends need to have an account too to talk with them. If you call land lines or cell phone #'s often, the fees will add up quickly.
NNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO never use that! It is terrible.
