How to repair a floor jack?

I want to add a phone jack on the second floor, how should I go about it?

  • There is a phone jack on the ground floor kitchen wall and right above it on the second floor is where I wanted to add another. I was thinking of running a regular phone wire, that you can buy from dollar store, through the wall by fishing it from the second floor but I don't know how to make the connections. How would I make the connections on the ground floor kitchen jack and how would I make them on the second floor? Please advise it's a pain going downstairs to answer the phone every time ... even though it's a good exercise. Thank you.

  • Answer:

If you can run the wire all the way to the main telephone terminal it is best. Stay away from the dollar store (flat wire). Goto Home Depot or something and buy some cat5 wire and a telephone jack. Run the wire to the basement (or wherever the terminal is). Polarity doesnt matter. connect I pair of wires to main terminal. And same pair on otherside to Red/Green terminals on phone jack. The cat5 has 4 pairs of wires, we usually use the blue/white pair. if you truely cannot run the wire to the main terminal: ***************************************… Y not just buy a cordless phone? ***************************************… find the nearest active telephone jack (still stay away from using the flat wire) open that jack connect to red/green or blue/white (depending on what wire was used. Use same pair on new jack.

An easier solution would be to get a cordless phone with a second handset (that is small and sits in a charger.) for the second floor.....Otherwise, just find the two wires running to the first floor phone, (usually red/green and run them to the second floor jack.) Find the proper terminals to get a dial tone...

i would not recommend running a line cord inside the walls between floors... just get a length of CAT3 or CAT 5 from home depot - they will sell you the wire by the foot so that you do not have to buy a whole box... probably for 25 cents per foot or less.... then you can follow the instructions for how to install a phone jack here http://nyphonejacks.blogspot.com/2009/12/how-to-wire-telephone-jack.html
