How to Wire a telephone jack?

Plugged ethernet cable into telephone jack and broke the telephone wires?

  • The office lady mistakenly thought that the telephone jack in the wall was the ethernet jack. I plugged the ethernet wire from the computer (which was turned on) to the telephone jack in the wall and now the telephones in the office do not work. Did the computer transmit electricity from the computer through the ethernet cable to the telephone jack in the wall? I know that USB ports transmit electricity from the computer through the firewall but through the ethernet too? Please let me know.

  • Answer:

FAIL an 8p8c commonly referred to as an RJ45 can not fit into an RJ11 jack... it is much larger than the 4p4c connector of a telephone line cord.. if you connected a telephone line to the ethernet port of your PC with a line cord, then the PC being connected to your phone line would short out the phone line... which would result in no dial tone.. removing the wire from the PC would resolve this issue.. if the pins in the jack were damaged, they could be shorting out your phone line.. there is NO power coming out of a PCs NIC card - so it would not have introduced power onto your phone line - and even if it did it would not be sufficient to damage anything on your line, as it would be less power than the phone line operates on..

I did not think the ethernet plug would fit. Get down on your hands and knees with a flashlight and may sure none of the tiny wires in the phone jack are shorted out. If they are you will need to straighten them out.
