Fax machine/printer problems?

Fax machine connection problems: No dial tone?

  • hi everyone: I have a sharp UX-70 fax machine that i put away in a cupboard a couple of years ago when the paper ran out. I now have a job where i need to use it. I have tried to set it all up but i can't seem to get it to work. The paper is in all okay now, i just can't get a dial tone when i try to connect it to my phone socket. I have broadband with orange and have got filters on the line, i tried it without the filters and still i got nothing. I had lost the phone line that was in the back of the fax but i have got several others that surely would work the same? or is there a special line that is needed. Before it went away it worked fine but i do recall something about needing a specific line...can any one help?

  • Answer:

Had this before, not all pstn leads are the same. ( the lead that goes from the machine to the telephone socket ). If you remove the leads from a couple of different phones you may find one that works. Some fax machines also need power to work the phone, the fax will work over a normal telephone line, so if you have a dial tone the line will be ok, so don't report the line faulty as you will be charged for a call out. If you can't find a pstn lead that works, Tescos do a phone for about a fiver, buy it, see if the lead works, if not take it back, nothing lost. If all else fails go to Sharp and buy one from them. Good luck.
