Do you need anything other then standard RJ11 phone jacks to have phone service through the cable company?
-
Just wondering if cable companies use existing phone jacks to install phone service. I wasn't sure if they used coax since, you know, they're a cable company.

Answer:
It depends on the cable company and the complexity of the installation. In business class service, Time Warner refuses to interface to a customer's equipment, but Comcast does. It's a responsibility thing, since if they screw up the wiring, then the phone vendor (me) gets pretty annoyed. In resi, I have seen it done where they usually just splice into the existing jack and disconnect the line at the demarc, reusing all of the house wiring. When we cut our residence line to Time Warner, I provided the interface jack and did the cut myself. The problem with some residence lines is that there may be an alarm involved. Now the simple job is a little more complex.

They use their coax up to the phone adapter, then there is a RJ11 port(s) on the back which hooks up to your phone system. It's similar to the cable modem typically used which has coax coming to it then an Ethernet port on the back that connects to your computer network. Connecting your phones to the cable phone adapter is pretty easy if you just have one phone, it just plugs into the phone adapter and it should work just like a normal phone. A lot of people are moving to just having one cordless base station and then a few cordless handsets around the house that don't require any wiring. If your existing phones are using jacks around the house and all need to be plugged in then its get a little complicated, but not too bad, because all the phone wiring in the house should come back to one point where traditional phone service would have been connected, but it may be on the outside of the house. If the cable company can put their phone adapter near where all these phone lines come back to, then all that has to be done is plug a phone line into the phone adapter, but the other end will have to be hard wired into the existing phone wiring for the house. The technician should take care of this since a majority of homes still use this type of setup. I've had Comcast business phone service hooked up twice and the technicians had to hard wire into the existing system both times, so I would think any other cable company selling phone service should do the same thing since most people would not know how to do it.
