Would they be able to trace my phone number if i had prank called them in the private number function ?
-
I left a message on my sister's social studies teacher's answer machine at school to get back at him for what he did to my sister. I'm very smart and I've tried to hide my phone number by punching in *67 in front of the number before i dial out. It allows my phone number to be displayed as private number or private caller. I called and left a message playing a DVD of Batman begins where batman gets gasses by scarecrow. Do you think they will be able to trace out my phone number ??I left the message when scarecrow says you need to lighten up because he harasses the kids in the school. Below is the scene of what i am talking about. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fw0fTmnIVKQ

Answer:
I seriously doubt that you are as smart as you think you are. Private numbers just mean it is not displayed to the public, which is the person on the other end of the phone. It doesn't mean that the phone company remains as clueless as you. There are records on who called who and a what time that is not available to the public, but is available to law enforcement agencies when a request goes through proper channels. Which means, if the social studies teacher files a complain and gives the phone company permission to look at the records, you are caught. I'm sure the time stamp on the answering machine would coincide nicely with the time of your phone call. If your sister has truly been treated unjustly, the avenue of approach would have to come from an authority figure, like her mother or father. They would have a greater chance of success of address any unjust behavior. I'm sure if you read the fine print in your phone service contract, you may find out that you have broken several state and federal laws that if convicted, could seriously effect your social life for the next 1 to 5 years.

Have you ever heard on the news that people have been arrested after making bomb threats or other threats over the phone? Well, the phone companies have records of EVERY CALL that goes through the phone switches. Hiding your caller ID data does not prevent the switch from logging the date, time, length and both phone numbers involved. That is how calls are traced back to the person who made the call. If that teacher decides to report that to the police - be prepared for an amazingly unpleasant experience. Next time - think before doing something that is illegal.
