    you need a phone line to get either dsl or dial-up if you want you can also get internet through your cable company via coax you can also do satellite through Hughes net or Dish or direct tv or a local company

I agree with other answers you need a telephone line (dial up), DSL or a Fiber connection, cable or satellite service. You can also get wireless adapters from cell companies like Sprint or ATT to use on laptops or desktops. In some places (cities mostly), there are also companies you can subscribe to services using a wireless internet card just like a home network card. They all cost money though.
