How can you tell if your phone is being tapped.?

    Conversations are not 'tapped' any more, they are monitored at the Phone company central office by a computer interface. Tapping is from the days when equipment was connected to a callers line, usually from a aerial pole or distribution point. However today telephone information is quickly converted into digital data for line transport, and cannot be tapped electrically, but has to be de-multiplexed from the carrier. Cellular is very different since it is basically a two way radio frequency carrier that can be intercepted locally without any knowledge by the user, as simple as dialing in a radio station. Only if someone connects to your line between the Pedestal to your NIU(network interface unit), or inside your home, can you detect it, by a click noise.

it makes a dull, thudding sound, unless the person tapping on it has long fingernails. then it has a sharp clicking sound.

not sure about the cell phone, but on land lines, you may hear a double clicking on your phone right when you answer or right before you dial also your phone may echo slightly while talking, but this could also be caused by a bad connection Also your phone might disconnect for no apparent reason. if you try to get the phone company to fix it, and it continues, thats further evidence. however, most phone companies will check it to see if it is being tapped, and if it is illegally being tapped then they will tell you and the cops, and remove it if it is being tapped legally, then they will not tell you.
