Why does my internet cut out when the phone rings?

Why Does My Internet Disconnect When My Phone Rings?

  • This problem just started recently, I have high speed internet through my cable company and i have vonage for my phone service. Im also running my laptop from a wireless router. I have two phones connected to the vonage router they are connected to one jack with a splitter. I was always able to use the phone and the internet at the same time but now every time the phone rings it disconnects me and takes a minute or two to reconnect again. I just got a new modem yesterday but this problem started about a week ago so its not from that. I disconnected the splitter and connected just one phone to the vonage router and the same thing happened, so i then tried to connect the other phone to the router and still the same thing. I have changed nothing at all, Does anyone know why this is happening?

  • Answer:

IF you lost your internet connection when the phone rang, then your phone would not ring since it is vonage (VoIP) and needs your internet connection to work... you are having problems with a wifi router, because you are using 2.4Ghz phones... access the router normally at http://192.168.1.1 enter the user ID and password usually admin/admin admin/password or admin/(blank) and change the channel that the wifi operates on... if this does not resolve the problem, see if using a corded, phone, or different frequency cordless phone makes a difference - DECT is the best option, but you could use a 5.8Ghz phone as well - since wifi operates within 2.4Ghz...

Since you have internet service through your cable, and Vonage VOIP through your cable, there is most likely a conflict in those services on your computer or modem setup. Have you recently added the wireless router, or always had the wireless router.? I have heard of these problems before, and it usually results from a wireless router, or some newer program added to a computer..(Conflict in memory space or useage of an area for another program, etc.) Beware of some cordless phones. They might say 5.8 Ghz., but the Base may be running at 2.4 Ghz,!!! Read the fine print.!

You need to contact Vonage. Something is not set up correctly for your voip since it seems to bleeding over to your internet connection.
