Do I need an Active phone line for Comcast Internet?

Do I need a Comcast Arris modem if I have Comcast phone service?

  • We have Comcast phone, internet, and cable service. I don't like paying the $7 a month to lease the Arris modem they gave me. I bought a surfboard modem from Best Buy and would like to replace the Arris with that one. The problem is the phone line. Do I need to have the Arris in order for the phone line to work? We have a separate phone line we used from AT&T, couldn't Comcast use a separate phone line so that I won't have to rent their Arris modem? I never had this many problems with AT&T, I think I regret my decision to leave them.

  • Answer:

if you get phone service from your cable company, you need a cablemodem with a built-in phone adaptor.... the surfboard doesn't have this. the phone line coming in from outside (AT&T) won't work. you can generally purchase a compatble cablemodem directly from Comcast, or they can give you a list of compatible modems.

you can also go on e-bay and buy the arris modem for around $40.00.

renting the equipment ensures that if there is ever any problems or upgrades in hardware it is the cable companies responsibility to replace the modem... if i was going to actually go out and buy a modem i would really only buy a DOCSIS 3.0 modem - but what is done is done... second thing would be to call the provider to make sure that it is compatible with their system.. if you get phone service from the cable company, then you should have purchased a surfboard that has a phone adapter built in... because once you call the cable company to change the modem with your new modem the phone service will no longer work - you just need to call them, tell them that you want to switch to a modem that you bought, and provide them with the MAC address of the new modem... then return the old modem.. if your phone service is with at&t or another company other than your cable provider, then your phone service will continue to work..
