Does anyone know of a cheap home phone service?

Does anyone know how good Magic Jack is for home phone service?

  • I been to there web site, but was wondering anyone out there has it & use it? & how good it is on calls?hearing the other party. I would love to hear from you if so. Need HELP !! *not a comptur nerd* :)

    Magic Jack is great for the money It's as cheap as it can get. I've used it for more than two years. IMHO it's great value.You can't beat free long distance anywhere in Canada or the U. S. It's a real money saver and works very well. although occasionally you may get a dropped call or minor interference, dropped calls are few and far between. The only time in my experience it isn't really good and you may get a lot of interference is when you may be running several applications at the same time, i.e. burning a DVD or cd. or chatting in a chat room. Several friends and relatives have also bought it and we are all extremely satisfied. Although I turn my computer off at night, calls are still answered and I receive the messages from the server the next time I boot up. http://www.magicjack.com/6/faq/ The 1st year it costs you 40.00U.S. from then on $20.00 per year. In Canada where I live it's $50.00 the first year which includes buying it plus$10.00 for a Canadian area code, the 2nd year it's$20.00 plus 10.00 for the Canadian area code A suggestion. Buy it from a local retailer, try it out, if it doesn't suit return it to the retailer for a refund. If you buy online or from an info commercial and run into a problem it may take some time to get a refund from magic jack. By mistake I triple ordered using the info commercial and although they advertised that charges wouldn't be processed for 30 days my visa card was charged immediately. I returned the 2 extra magic jacks for a refund but it took more than a month to get the credit. The other answers are fairly typical - if your broadband is good, your calls will also be high quality (and cheap!) You can get rid of most occasional static or dropped words by using a plugin called MagicFeatures. It automatically bumps the priority of Magic Jack running in your computer a little, putting it just a little above other software running at the same time. That tends to clean up most calls that might otherwise have some static or crackle in them. It adds about 20 features to those already found in Magic Jack, including the ability to block calls from specific numbers (or block calls from any anonymous caller), allowing you to add 50 speed dial numbers, etc. Even without MagicFeatures, the calls are generally clean (if you don't have a massive download going on in the background).

You need high speed internet service to get the best results. I use one and it is flawless. The one drawback is when my computer updates and I have to log in again. The magicJack needs to be restarted at that point. The new version of the device plugs directly into your router. This solves that problem.
