What is this wierd clicking noise coming from my phone mean?
-
we have one phone jack that is perfectly fine. However this other jack on the same line (we think), that when u plug in the phone all u get is this strange clicking noise. we have DSL but the things that u plug in so the phone works r fine. we know the phone works, we know the phone cord works. what does this mean?

Answer:
The other jack may have been for a second line and if the clicking is very fast and steady ( like five per second) then that is the type of circuit that was used for the two lines that took one line and digitally split it into two. That circuit can not be used for dsl so they had to provide a second physical line for the dsl and now that circuit is hooked to the other jack. Or if the clicking is medium and steady ( two per second) then it could be for a second line but there is trouble on the line and it has a maintenance test unit @ your phone box. If you go to your phone box and see two sets of wires try switching all the wires to one set or visa versa. If that doesn't work then its a defective wire or jack.

you could be close to an electric fence if youre out in the country and the one phone is acting like a radio antenna. if its not on the same phone number and your dial tone comes from a "remote terminal" and not from the phone office you may have a bad channel card. .a bad fax modem can do this too.your local telephone man can fix any of these
