What do I do with my phone number?
-
I'm moving. I have had my same phone number for over 40 years. In between moving from my old home to my new, I will be staying at a friend's for about 2-3 months. I really want to have my same phone number at my new place, but I don't think it will be possible because of the disconnect time(but may be?). Is there any possibility that I can make my old home number my cell phone number for the time being (so everyone can still contact me) and then after I move into my new place, make my cell phone number (and my old home number=same) my new home number? Sounds confusing but will it work?!

The companies use different numbers, so the land line can not be a cell phone number. Why not get the line reconnected at your friends (2nd line), then take it with you? You had the same number for 40 years is great, but life is about change, be willing to let it go and move on with a fresh start... and stay listed! Then people can always find you!

You tell people what it is so they can call you?

You can take it with you. My friend moved from LA to NY and he still has the same phone number even with the same area code so it really doesn't matter because with cell phones its free to call within the US so don't worry about it.

Why not sign up for Vonage for a few months, and transfer your number to that? If you have an internet connection (at your friends house, or your new house, or wherever), you will always have the same number and area code. I would guess with number portability you could transfer your current homephone number to a digital provider. You could always call and ask.

ask your cell company. i doubt it can be done. just tell the landline phone company to use the phone number in the new house. i'm sure that you are keeping up your service with them, right?
You ask, I answer
Talk to a manager, don't talk to someone who's new or who doesn't have the power to give you what you want. Don't ask "is it possible" say "You need to do this for me." Don't get the cell number all mixed up with the home number, it's confusing.

You can arrange with the telephone company to have all your landline calls re-directed to your cell phone, there will be a charge for this I think,if this is possible,I think your landline number will always be active and not closed down,so you can always revert back to your landline with the same number once you are settled in your new home again. Speak to the phone company for advice.

call the phone company and let them know to put you number "on vacation" till you call them to turn it back on. make sure that where you move to you can have the area code and prefix and are in their service area first. if things aren't going to workout with your phone company of 40 years, call vonage and make sure you have a broadband connection set up where you move to, that way you keep the entire number no matter what.
