How to align two boxes in a line?

What do I do at the network interface to reassign an existing phone line?

  • I have two phone numbers, each on seperate physical lines. My primary number is voice only, with two phones and two jacks. I have a secondary line for my DSL gateway/modem and a phone that no one uses anymore. I want to cancel the second phone number to save money, reassigning the DSL to the primary number. If I do this, I will be forced to put my modem on a jack upstairs, with the secondary line laying there doing nothing. To prevent having to move the modem, I want to go to the network interface to move the secondary line onto the primary line. The end goal is to have all three jacks in the house connected to my remaining phone number and DSL. The line I want to reassign has CAT 3 cable. The network interface is not one of those fancy new plastic NID boxes, but an older thing behind a metal cover. If it were a new plastic thing, I wouldn't be so apprehensive, but I don't know what I am getting into with the older interface. House was built 1981. Thanks for your help.

  • Answer:

you just need to take the wire that is going towards your home that is on the line you wish to disconnect, and connect it to the same lugs as the wiring for the phone line that you wish to keep active...
