What does the pause button on the phone do?

Well if this is a cordless phone...(not a cell phone) the pause button is probably to control an answering machine at the base station. It will let you pause the messages as they are being played. Sometimes a manufacturer will use the same handset with multiple models, so even though your base station might not have an answering machine, the button is still there. If you are talking about a cell phone, it is likely for a music player function. A lot of new phones have music players and this would let you pause music to answer the phone or talk to someone. If you have a programmable phone (where you can store phone numbers), it may be to add a pause between the number you dial and any security/access code you may need to enter. For example, if you have your work phone programmed in and have to enter a code to access your messages, the pause button will allow you to leave a "space" after the phone number to allow time for the other phone to pick-up before continuing with the access code. Otherwise, the access code would be entered immediately after the phone number is dialed (before your work phone even picks up the call). Hope that makes sense.
