  • Question about Vonage free international calls If I hook-up identical vonage phone line router, one line in the united state and other in Kenya , I will able to make free call between this two line? Im not plainly understanding this can someone explain how this work and include clear instructions.

  • Answer:

What you are asking about is called "In-Network" calling. In-Network calling works within All VoIP services. With In-Network calling, everyone with an account within any VoIP service can talk to all other VoIP clients using the same VoIP service, over the Inernet. This is how well known VoIP services like Skype, Google Talk, Yahoo Messenger, Gizmo5, MSN Windows Live, etc., allow their users to talk to each other for free, over the Internet. These services all allow PC-to-PC calling, for free. These services started out as Instant Messaging services that later provided Voice Over Inernet for voice calling, too. But, services that are considered "home phone replacement" VoIP services also provide free In-Network calling too. Examples of these services are Vonage, Packet8, Lingo, CallCentric, InPhonex, etc. But, these services don't rely on PC-to-PC calling only. They primarily use ATA's (analog telephone adapters) to make VoIP calls over Internet using a regular telephone connected to the ATA phone adapter. The calls through these services still originate and travel over the Internet. So again, all calls within any of these services allow free In-Network calling between their registered clients. Why is In-Network calling free? Because In-Network calls All travel over the Internet. All Internet data transfer is free (so to speak). Just like you can send e-mail free, so too can you send voice calls over Internet free. It's all just data being transferred over the Net. The only reason we pay for VoIP service is when we want to call other people "Off-Network". So, to call someone on their regular landline phone or cell, that is an Off-Network call. Why does Off-Net calls cost? Because now the calls are routed "off the Internet" through the Telco's and the Telco's charge the VoIP carriers to access their network phone switches. So, to specifically answer your Vonage question: If you have one Vonage ATA box in USA and another Vonage ATA box in Kenya, then the two boxes connect directly to each other over the Internet. And because all Internet traffic is free, so too is your Vonage-to-Vonage calls. Just like it will be with any other VoIP-to-VoIP calls. (Of course, Internet traffic isn't truely free. We have to pay a monthly access fee to use the Internet in the first place.... right ;)
