How Do I Use Call forwarding?

Can I use call-forwarding or call-blocker on a toll free number like 1-800 or 1-877?

  • I don't understand it, I have a private - unlisted phone number that is also registered with the, " do not call list ' and I still keep getting harassing phone calls daily from a single phone number. Please, can anyone help ???

  • Answer:

Check with your service provider for Call Blocking service. This will allow you to have a list of numbers that will reject calls based on the number. If your provider doesn't offer this, you may need to take a bit more drastic change. Assuming that you want to keep a POTS (Plain Ordinary Telephone Service) line, and not have VOIP, your options maybe a bit more limited as you are probably stuck with one or two providers. You could also file a complaint with the local police. Do Not call 911 unless it is a threat, but if your city offers it, call 311 and ask how to press charges on a harassment call. Also, check with your provider for other solutions as well. You may want to change your telephone number. Yes, I know - it will be a pain in the a**, but I will try to offer a solution that may make life a bit easier. Get a Google Voice number. You will most likely get a local number, but it's not guaranteed. Google Voice offers some basic call management features. Problem callers calling the GV number could be set as SPAM, or even simulate a Not in Service message. Once you get a Google Voice number, you will need to verify your numbers. Google Voice will call the number and ask you to enter a 2 digit number that shows on the screen. Once you do this, give everyone you deal with the Google Voice number. Tell them that in about 30 days, your old number will no longer ring to you. In 30 days, call your provider and ask them to change your number, and let them know you are changing because of telephone harassment. They should waive any fees normally associated with changing the number. Immediately afterwards, make the adjustment to GV. Add a line with the new number. Once it is working, delete the old number. Google Voice also offers voice mail, and can force unknown callers to announce themselves. If you enter your contacts into GV, you can even have unique voice mail announcements based on group. Most importantly, Setting callers as SPAM, or giving a Number not in service message. Keep the home number private, even after you change it. If you have to unblock your number because someone has ACR, use the GV interface to make the call. GV will call you and connect the call showing the GV number in the CID. Hope this solves your problem. Also, if you have an Android, or RIM cell phone, Google Voice has a native app. iOS such as the iPhone, iPad, and iPod Touch has an emulator app to work with GV, you will probably need a SIP line for the app to work on a iPod Touch, or iPad.

Is your phone number a toll free number? If yes, then this special number usually have call management feature that you can use for screening or blocking unwanted calls. Also, you said that you are already registered on the DoNotCall registry but you still receive calls. It is because this registry does not prevent you from being called instead it is a sort of privacy protection in order to give you the right to sue any one invading your privacy particularly those telemarketers.

You may want to contact your phone provider for details or information on how to enable call forwarding or call blocking. It may cost you extra for activating such features on your land line phone.
