What is digital communication!? HELP!?

• I have an essay question for college and i am unable to think of a way of explainin what digital communication is! I know the forms of digital communication such as telephones, internet etc. But cannot get to that stage until i thoroughly explain what digital communication is! and i have no idea!!! Im not a cheat im desperate!!

Voice to analog. Now ,Digital is either a zero or a one.A one can be either a positive or negative voltage. A zero is either zero voltage or slightly positive or negative.The digital series of ones & zeros is the digital representation of a sample of an analog signal converted to digital.
