Can a phone network trace the location of your phone?
-
I've lost my phone, (it's a Sony Ericson W910i) and my phone network is 02, i have been thinking about going into my local 02 shop and asking if they could trace it for me, I could give them my phone number and a good idea of where I lost it, would this be enough to trace it (if not what information do i need?). The only other thing is that I think it was low on battery when I lost it so it is most likely dead now, but surely they could find it's last known location or something?

Answer:
They can triangulate it to the last known location before it went off... Though triangulation is not that precise.

If the phone has GPS and that GPS was enabled, then yes it can be traced. Problem is, I don't think the local carrier has the capability. Typically, unless you have a "find my phone" type of app set up on it, only emergency personnel have the authority to initiate such a search.

If the person that found it is using it there should be a record available from your carrier listing the phone calls made and received. This information could be used to contact those people and determine the identification of the person using it. It is possible to determine the approximate location of an active (turned on) phone by finding the nearest cell tower(s) to the phone at a given moment. All this will, of course, require the assistance of the provider of that phone. Good Luch!
