Nokia n95 fault after software update?
-
After watching the "Free satnav for your nokia" advert on television last week i contacted Vodafone who told me i could have the application but they didn't support it so i needed to contact Nokia. I called Nokia and again asked if i could have free satnav, i was told only nokia smart phones could have it so i asked if my N95 was a smart phone and i was told all N-series phones were smart phones. I therefore asked how i could obtain the free satnav, explaining that i am useless with technology. The staff member fully explained that i could use my PC but i would need OVI, i would need to backup my phone to prevent data loss and i would have to obtain the latest software before i could get the satnav so i proceeded to follow the advice given. i performed the software update and re-installed data as per the online manual. It was minutes after the software update that i noticed the brightness of my screen flickering very slightly. Over the next few days the screen got progressively worse to the point where the screen light now only comes on once a blue moon and when it does its normally only for a second or on rare occasions it flickers for 10-20seconds . To rub salt into the wound i have subsequently discovered that i was wrongly advised (several times, verbally and in writing by Nokia and verbally by my contract provider) and that i can not have the free satnav app anyway. I look after my phone very well as i loved it, it was in perfect A1 condition not sporting any scratches or damage, ive never downloaded anything to it before. Had i been properly advised i would not have updated my phone software and it would still be working 100%. As Nokia staff have thus far given incorrect information, promise call backs that dont happen, seem unable to read or collate written information i was forced to investigate myself. I was very alarmed to read of all the customers phones that have been corrupted by software updates. The website and staff member didnt make me aware of any risk to my phone when software updating other than data loss if i didnt back the data up, infact the website highlights the importance of updating software, you get "new features and improved performance, better battery life, free features, improvements and bug fixes " even the product malfunction advice is "update phone software" (no mention of the possible pitfalls) my phone is no longer under warranty and im tied into a sim only contract for a further 7months, after many e-mails and phone calls nokia have said "As a gesture of goodwill, Nokia will be collecting your handset to be flashed free of charge. This will restore your phone’s software to its factory settings and erase any data stored on the handset. However, as you already tried the hard reset on your handset and this failed to alleviate the problem, it is possible that the issue with the screen is not connected to the software problem, and which case flashing is not guaranteed to fix the problem. If this is the case, any further repairs required will not be free of charge as your handset is out of warranty. However, any repairs and costs will be discussed with you before they take place" my questions, when !! nokia call to say after being flashed your screen is still faulty we want £££ to fix, where do i stand, are nokia liable? does anyone know of any other (free) method of fixing the problem? THANKYOU

Answer:
I would ask word of mouth locally to see if anyone in your area has the know-how with mobiles, trust me there is always someone. Nokia, should not carry out any work to your phone after flashing the screen unless you have given permission for them to do so, check with them before sending.
