Are S'porean having enough or for MORE to COME?

What happens if i haven't got enough money in my bank when my contract for my mobile phone is due to come out?

  • My mobile phone contract bill is planned to come out on the 6th of this month and i havent got enough money in my bank to cover it, i will have enough and be able to put the money in my bank on the 7th so what will happen? cheers

  • Answer:

The cell phone company will attempt a transfer. If you have overdraft protection, that will be triggered and you will get hit with overdraft fees. If you don't have overdraft protection, the transfer will fail and they will be contacting you for payment.

Unfortunately you will be too late. You will get a dishonour fee (as they are called here) which where I live is $40 but it varies from bank to bank as well. Some are higher. The company will then considere your payment to be in arrears. Also your accout can be in arrears from the dishonour fee and some banks will hit you again with fees for your account not being in credit. Best solution is to call them a week before the payment is due and ask them to change the date for this month. Some can do it on 3 days notice but most want at least a week. That way it comes out on a differant date and you wont get hit with the dishonour fee. Being so close to the date you could still try and talk to them, just explain honestly the situation and they may be able to help you and take it out on the next day :) *Just to add. None of my direct debits are taken out the NEXT day ona weekend. If it falls due on a weekend then the payment comes out Friday. Thats all my direct debits too from rent to my car payment so be careful. I thought it would be Monday when it was due on a Sunday and I got hit $40 late fee from my car payment because they took it Friday morning before my salary went into my account that afternoon. Live and learn I guess*

Because your DD is due out on Sunday, you may be lucky. This is because direct debits are usually not collected on Sundays, but are done on the next working day instead (in this case Monday 7th February). You say you will have money in the account on the 7th, so do this promptly, early in the day, and you may be OK. If the mobile phone company do come for the money on the Sunday, they will not be able to have the money, as it is not in your account. This means that the bill will be unpaid, and you will incur charges from the bank, which could be anything from around £8 to £35, depending on your particular bank. You will have to pay the bill on top of these charges; it is not a case of paying one or the other, but paying both. You could incur daily fees too, but again that would depend on your bank.

Is the anniversary date for your contract on the 6th of each month and some networks will only attempt to take payments 14 days later. Mine is the 5th of the month and O2 take the money on 19th, it should dtate on your bill when they will take the money. Sadly, if the payment date is tomorrow then your network could temporarily cease your service til payments have been credited to your mobile phone account. One thing that could be in your favour is that the your provider may only take payments on 7th as the 6th is a weekend. Best of luck to you

the bank will charge you, diffrent banks diffrent charges. Barclays charge me 8 pounds and i think natwest charged my dad 20. The company will be on your back, If you dont pay it back asap, they will switch off outbound calls and later inbound. Dont forget you will be risking your credit, one miss payment is on for 6 years in the uk. In your case it wont be too bad i suggest you ring them and tell them if they cant do anything then your just gonna have to face charges and ring them to sort it out the next day. Dont expect them to keep trying to take payments out, they do it once the rest is upto you, you will have to call them and pay it off. Its not major if its one day off though and the phone company wait around 2-3 days for you to sort it out.

Phone your bank and arrange a planned overdraft (if they'll let you, but they usually do), you'll be charged interest on the overdraft there but it'll be almost nothing if you pay it back quickly. Otherwise the money will go out and you'll probably be charged a flat fee of £15 or so for going overdrawn and then a few pounds each day you stay overdrawn.

Best to contact your mobile phone company, explain your situation, and if at least three days before payment is due to be collected, they can alter the collection date. This will save you bank charges, that in many cases are far more than the bill you need to pay. Hope this helps.

Either your bankers will pay the DD and charge you an appropriate fee or bounce the payment, again incurring another fee. Why not phone your bankers to request a temporary overdraft facility.

you will get charged an overdraft fee from your bank for not having the money there
