Does the DSi's firmware update automatically?

I have an iPhone 3GS with iPad baseband. How can I update to latest firmware? (iOS 5)?

• I have a "newer" iPhone 3GS with the iPad's 6.15 baseband. The phone is currently on firmware version 4.2.1 and I am hoping to get it up to iOS 5. My understanding is that I cannot do a stock update because of the iPad baseband, but that I may be able to update using a custom firmware. I have tried making an iOS 5 CFW with sn0wbreeze, but the phone just doesn't seem to want to update, giving me boot and restore loops, and I have tried the various tools like iREB, TinyUmbrella, etc. to work around this. To get out of that state I had to use greenpois0n (redsn0w didn't work) to re-jailbreak and put my phone back in working order where it currently stands with an untethered jailbreak, 4.2.1 firmware, and 6.15 baseband. Please help me figure out whether or not it is even possible to get my phone up to iOS 5, and if so, please explain how to do it. You will have to download the stock firmware and use redsn0w to create a firmware for iPhone 3GS .
