Whats up with my cell phone bill going up because of data transfers?

i have att and my cell phone bill went up another $100 because of data transfers. ive been on the internet mabe once or twice. it says ive been on a lot more than that. $100 more. i dont have internet and i kno it charges me every time i used it but wats going on? ive been on my yahoo messenger mabe once or twice also. i dont get it. the bill says that ive transfered alot of data from the internet. do i need to change some settings or do i need to take it to att and find out whats up. can some one help me? i think i should switch cell phone companies. tell me whats up some one. how much is going to keep charging me?

Answer:
One thing to keep in mind is that you might be running applications which use the internet(ie messengers or downloading ringtones and maybe picture messaging). If you can live without the option of data I would get them to disable it all together(chances are you have it now but just dont have a plan). That way you know that its physically impossible for you to use data.
