UNLOCK CODE FOR TMOBILE PHONE?

Can i use an unlock code for my t-mobile shadow that someone else used.. i know that our imei numbers are different.. does that mean that each phone has its own spereate unlock code.. or are you able to use unlock code for that phone.. for ex. lets say my brother has a shadow and he got his unlock code some way.. am i able to use that unlock code.. will it work??? thankss!!
