What is a 3G network anyway?

What is a 3G network and what makes on better then the other? Don't all the carriers have 3G networks?

  • I keep seeing Sprint commercials saying they have the only 3G network..but, then I saw a Verizon commercial saying the same thing. Why does it matter and what the heck is it?

  • Answer:

3G allows customers of 3G optimized networks with 3G compatible phones to surf the internet on the phones faster, and allows for somewhat better phone service/call quality. It matters only if use the internet on your phone regularly. Sprint is not the only carrier with 3G. AT&T, Verizon and others have 3G service. Please do not forget that commercials are aimed to glorify the company and/or its product and usually hide the truth. The whole 3G craze was boosted when the new iPhone 3G came out. It is not that dire to have.

Sprint says that have the only *full* 3G network, which I suppose means they have 3G available everywhere they have service. all the major carriers have 3G networks. The "smallest" one right now is T-Mobile's, since they're rolling it out in larger municipal areas first, slowly, and apparently they're doing it right. I have their g1, and I get 3G in DC, where I work, but only Edge at home in north Florida. Not a big deal, because I know they'll eventually have it nationwide. The others have broader 3G coverage because they got a jump on the service. T-Mobile didn't have any 3G phones in their line until recently (with the G1). To answer your first question: 3G is faster at transferring data. GPRS is the slowest, Edge (2.5G) is faster, 3G is fastest.
