Ain't Not Cool
Your big three carriers are best in terms of coverage (Sprint, Verizon, Cingular) but remember that a lot of the smaller ones (including Boost, Virgin, and soon Amp'd) usually lease lines from these carriers, so their subscribers have access to the bigger guys' network anyway. The coolest phones go to Boost and Virgin. They are more expensive, but they give you the best content (from sources like MTV, Comedy Central, ESPN, etc) available for prepaid users. Also watch for Amp'd Mobile, launching early next year. They have content deals with MTV, Universal Music Group, and other media giants and should come out strong.

Always tailor your prepaid service to your needs. For this, the most flexible service would be Virgin Mobile. They offer 3 basic service levels: 1) 25c/min for the first 10 minutes of a day, 10c/min after that 2) 35c/day and always 10c/min 3) $29.99/month and 300 "Anytime" or "Whenever" minutes and free nights. Options 1, 2, and 3 are listed in usage order... If you use the phone for more than 2 minutes a day, use option 2. If more than 5 minutes a day, use option 3. Their phones are both cheap and nicely capable.

Virgin mobile does have good texting prices but their calls are expensive and there's no unlimited nights or weekends like other prepaids have. And they have no service anywhere for certain areas. My BF has that and he gets dropped calls every 5 seconds on the phone. He had verizon pre paid and he had unlimited nights and weekends, but the texts kind of add up. Sometimes his service messed up but he had unlimited nights and weekends most of the time. And also verizon lets you text people with verizon for free i do believe as well.
