Does using a VoIP software (Skype?) on a cell phone work well?

With any software/hardware (and ubiquitous WiFi), is there any complete WiFi cell phone solution?

  • I would like to get rid of my Cingular monthly cell plan and use VoIP instead since it's so much cheaper, and I have WiFi everywhere on my college campus. Will any combination of software (e.g. Skype, Gizmo, Yahoo) and hardware (Pocket PC, Palm, Smartphone) allow me to pull this off? So far I have found Skype + Pocket PC with SkypeIn and SkypeOut. This looks good but I'm not sure how receiving calls would work (i.e. if the Pocket PC would run out of batteries after being on round the clock). Plus, I would need a headset. Does anyone know if I can yet achieve my dream of a WiFi cell phone with quality sound?

Here is one from Vonage: http://www.engadget.com/entry/1234000020040108/ And here is some news on the Skyp one: http://www.engadget.com/entry/1234000493052769/ Unfortunately, you're really going to have to wait a few more months to a year for this technology to become consumer friendly and available. Don't expect the first generation wi-fi phones to be as good as current GSM/CDMA phones.

There are a couple of Wireless VoIP phones, but not in a device such as the one you seek. These are still in the works. Some have been launched with very poor reception and they were yanked off the market. Look for a company to come out with something next year for this using a technology called UMA. Can't say much more on that one, but patience here and you will find what you seek.
