How do you jail break an ipod touch and what does it do?

Why do people jail break their ipod touch? What does it mean? I am planning to buy one.?

Is it something like hacking your xbox? i have an xbox but i have not hacked it as i dont want to break the warranty. Do we have to jail break the ipod in order to copy songs from my computer because Ive heard how notorious apple company is when it comes to fight against privacy. Thanks

  I don't know about xbox, but jailbreaking is basically breaking the bounds apple has set for it's products, meaning you can download apps from cydia (like the app store) which mostly has apps which were not put to the official app store for some reason. It also allows you to modify the lock screen, icons, themes, and composition of the user interface. It will void your warranty, meaning if you bring a jailbreaked device into an apple store, they won't do anything to it, when it's broken. But, you can always unjailbreak, just plug in your ipod to your computer and update the software and sync it. Then it's just on your concience, whether you think it's right or wrong to fool the apple people. Hope this helps! :)
